InfoObject is the smallest building block, you need to use Infoobjects to design or configure other SAP BW objects such as InfoCubes, DSO, Multiproviders, Queries and etc.
There are five types of InfoObjects, each representing a type of business entity or establishing a relationship between entities. The following are types of InfoObjects.
This type of InfoObject represent business entities that are subject of analysis for example region, country, customer.
This type of InfoObjects represents numeric measures of business entities for example amount, quantity.
This type of InfoObjects represents the period of the transaction for example fiscal year.
This type of InfoObjects represents the unit of measures for example currency, unit of volume.
This type of InfoObjects represents entities that are internal to SAP BW for example data load request ID, this type of InfoObjects are not customizable.
All types of InfoObjects are delivered by SAP BW Business Content, if you can’t find appropriate InfoObjects that provided by SAP you can create custom InfoObject. Next we will show you how to create custom InfoObjects.
How to Create Custom InfoObjects
1.Goto transaction RSA1. First you need to create InfoArea, InfoArea represent the highest level of grouping.
2.Create InfoObject Catalog, this is a logical group to simplified manage a vast number of InfoObjects within InfoArea. You need to create 2 InfoObject Catalog — Characteristic and Key Figures.
Right Click on InfoArea and click Create InfoObject Catalog
Popup screen will show, in this screen you need to enter technical name and description, and select InfoObject catalog Type Characteristic or Key Figure then click Create.
After you click Create then click Activate.
3. Right click on your InfoObject Catalog and click Create InfoObject from context menu.

4.After you click CONTINUE next you need to configure your characteristic InfoObject, there are 6 tabs in configuration screen InfoObject : General, Business Explorer, Master Data/Texts, Hierarchy, Attributes, Compunding.
InfoObject – General Tab
In General Tab there are two required setting you must configure : Type and size of the data
There are 4 types of Data : CHAR, NUMC, DATS, TIMS.
You need to select Data Type for this sample we selec CHAR, enter LENGTH. The Conversion Routine is defaulted by SAP BW System as ALPHA for the CHAR data.
The conversion routine determines the following :
- The data stored in specific format in the database.
- The data is stored in an internal format, and also the way data appears on screen.
For example : if you have InfoObject characteristic ZC_CUST is 10 and ALPHA is selected, in SAP BW value of 1 is stored as 0000000001, without conversion routine, the SAP BW would treat ZC_CUST value of 1 is different with 001.
- Lowercase Letters, If you check this box, the SAP BW System use the value exactly as it’s entered.
- Attribute Only, if you check this box means that infoObject can be assigned as an attribute of another InfoObject but can’t used as a navigational attribute, this means it can be display attribute only.
- Characteristic is Document Property, if you check this box allows an analyst to record and document comment.
- Transfer Routine, you can write custom ABAP Code to manipulated of incoming data, this exit is called global transfer routine and will executed whenever the InfoObject is used.
InfoObject – Business Explorer Tab
This configuration in this area influence the presentation in a report that use this InfoObject, for example Display is filled with Text, which means when you run report that uses this InfoObject the report only display text without key.
Bex Map Area
The Bex Map Area is relevant when you want to use geographical areas, for example you need to get data sales based on geographic information such as longitude, latitude for their physical address.
Master Data/Texts Tab
This Master Data/Texts tab is purpose to configure the way text is stored in the SAP BW System, it’s important to have text description for the master data.
Master data is defined as type of data that stores information about business entity and doesn’t change over long period of time.
With text settings, you know the master data must have key and description, and if you select With Text checkbox , there are additional step related to the process of providing text information about master data/business entity.
Language-Dep Text, if you check this box, the SAP BW System receives and stores only short text for the InfoObject and that text can be in different languages.
Time-Dependent Text, if you check this box, the SAP BW System will get text of master data that valid from particular date.
Business analyze need to analyze data with related this InfoObject or master data, for example Customer data usually have attributes such as Marketing Office, City, Delivery Plant etc.
Hierarchies are used to display data in tree structures and can have multiple levels with nodes. for example Customers have assigned to to specific region.
Check the WITH HIERARCHIES box to enable hierarchies for a characteristic InfoObject. the hierarchies in SAP BW can have multiple levels, with maximum of 98.
